Cook’s Mission

The late 18th and early 19th centuries was a period in European history, now commonly referred to as the ‘Age of Wonder’ or ‘Age of Enlightenment’, and one where science and philosophy came together. It was a unique time when artist and scientist could share common aims, ambitions and language – and together create a ‘romantic’, humanist science. It was the time when new scientific discoveries established many universal principles on which much modern science is based.The names of the great minds of that time, still resonating today, include the great physicist and mathematician, Sir Isaac Newton…
