New Zealand - Aotearoa - was the last habitable land mass on earth to be found and then settled by people. That was only a little more than one thousand years ago, according to some recent historians and archaeologists. Others claim, after a century of debate and analysis that the earliest human presence in the country should be dated to between 1210 and 1385 AD .

By comparison, Chinese, Middle East, European, American and Polynesian civilisations had been developing for two or three thousand years before New Zealand was even discovered.
