Te Powhiri – Welcome at Wharetaewa

Although the 1840 Treaty of Waitangi remains for many the symbolic beginning of the Maori – European relationship, the first official welcome ceremony for Europeans in the form of a traditional Maori powhiri, took place 70 years earlier at the turangawaewae (traditional home) of Ngati Hei – Wharetaewa on Wharekaho beach in Mercury Bay.
