The Tuia Stage
20 October 2019 : 12 hr free outdoor event, featuring local poets, storytellers, musicians
Venue: Taylor's Mistake, Whitianga
The Tuia Stage is a 12 hr event, featuring local artists - poets, storytellers, musicians, dancers and kapa haka groups. The central performance will be a special composition by Charles Royal, performed by James Webster and friends, incorporating taonga puoro, traditional Maori instruments. The 30 minute composition, sung largely in English with Maori passages will be heard for the first time on The Tuia Stage. It will be accompanied by 20 woodwind and string musicians from Waikato’s Orchestra Central, alongside Mercury Bay Community Choir who will be working on the performance from June 2019.
The Raranga Tent situated next to The Tuia Stage will exhibit creations from Coromandel Weavers who will be demonstrating the art of weaving for members of the public of all ages to observe and to try.
The Tuia Stage is an outdoor performance space, located at Taylor’s Mistake for the purpose of Tuia 250 commemoration activities. Events on The Tuia Stage have been fully funded by Lotteries Tuia Programme and therefore are free to the public.
